Prelim
In this Prelim Task, me and my group, which consisted of Me, Ashufta and Josh created a lip synching music video.
Process
To start of the process of this task my group spend a good couple of hours planning exactly what we wanted to do. We planned how we wanted to present the music video, how we wanted the shots to look and what camera angles to use. We also matched up times from the song to specific shots we wanted so we knew where to film from each time.
We made a Story Board as part of our planning as this was an important process for us as it allowed us to follow the plan for when we came to film for the music video.
Once we had finished the planning we made our way into the studio where we started setting up. We set the studio up with dull lighting to start of with as we wanted the first half of the video to be 'dark'. We shot this specific scene around 3 times as the first shot didn't go the way we wanted it to go and then we wanted to make sure we had another shot just in case we change our mind or something was different.
For the second shot we set the studio up with bright lights as we wanted the light to sit directly on the top half of our body and focus most of the light towards the face as the tune became fasted and brighter so we brought the light up for this section.
For the third shot we set the studio up like we were a band. We put in some drums, microphone and a guitar which each one of us used and played. We used this set up because it was the chorus which had both the male and female in it and it was up beat with instruments making up the backing sound so it seemed like a good idea to include that for our video.
Reflecting
Reflecting upon going to the studio, I felt that it was a good opportunity as we were able to use professional equipment to film for our video. We were also able to make use of the rest of the facilities such as the green screen, all black background or the all white infinity background. By using these it meant that it made the video look professional as well as having good quality footage.
I felt that my group made good use of what we had and considering we went in with no original idea of what we wanted to do but came out with full footage that was good for the first time we had put on a performance and used professional equipment.
If we had more time, we would have spent longer planning for the task to get a full, detailed plan of exactly what we wanted to do to create a good, entertaining music video for the audience.
Approach to the main task
When I come to plan and make my music video I will make sure that i have all of my planning and research done and put into detail of exactly how I want to make my video and make sure it meets the task criteria. I have realised from this Prelim task that I need to be organised with my time and I have to be organised with a detailed plan of exactly what I want. If I don't have a set plan I will struggle to do the video as I wont have anything to go by and it won't turn out how I would like it to turn out. Organising is an important part in this task.
Prelim Video Analysis
Here is my groups prelim video:
The finished prelim video is not something I would submit as I have realised it is not how we wanted it to be. For this video we didn't do enough planning and preparation in order to deliver something that was good. I have also seen that the performance aspect in this video is not very good. In order to create a good, entertaining music video, you have to have the performance element to draw in the audiences attention.
In the editing side of this video, I think that most of it is good. There is once small bit in the video where the lips don't match the song and even though we tried to edit it as much as we could in order to get it to match, it didn't work. There are also areas in this video where we have had to cut bits out of, for example, when Josh plays the guitar, we started of with an extreme close up of his hand but the lip synching was well out of time of the music so we had to cut it out in order to get them to match up.
From this, I have learned that if I want to be able to create a smooth cut video, I have to film in bigger chunks otherwise it just doesn't flow properly and it doesn't look right.
Evaluation
Overall, I have felt that for the first time in a professional studio, using professional equipment, most of it went well. I think we got some good camera shots and some good areas of planning. Although there was some good areas, there were also some bad areas, like the fact we didn't plan enough or have a set idea. If I was to do this video again I would make sure that we had done a sufficient amount of planning and research in to the song and went into the studio knowing exactly what it was we wanted to do.
I would also do some more research into camera shots and angles to get the best shots to portray things the right way. Camera shots and angles make up the music video and if we don't have good shots, the video won't be portrayed to it's best.
When I come to make my Music Video, I will make sure I have a detailed plan of everything I want to do as this will help me create the video I want.
I will also make sure that I control my time to certain tasks as if I don't, i will run out of time and not everything will be done. I will make sure that the people I have in my video know exactly what it is they are doing, as when I did my AS thriller task, at some points, our actors and actresses didn't know exactly what they were doing.
